AUDIBLE DEBUTS CHILLING NEW SCI-FI FROM BERLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL WINNER IVAR LEON MENGER

Callum Blue, Anastasia Griffith and Marc Warren star in new audio-drama from Germany’s master of thriller.

London, 11th October 2016 – Catalysing the surge of interest in classic 70s and 80s sci-fi thrillers, and just in time for Halloween, Audible tomorrow exclusively debuts Monster 1983, an original audio-drama from Berlinale-winning director Ivan Leon Menger. Directed by multiple-Audie and RPA winner Cherry Cookson, the chilling tale stars Callum Blue (Dead Like Me), Anastasia Griffith (Damages) and Marc Warren (Hustle) amongst others.

Drawing influences from Poltergeist, Stand By Me and E.T. and other Spielberg classics, the story unfolds in the small coastal town of Harmony Bay, Oregon. Still reeling from a sudden and profound family tragedy, Sheriff Cody uproots his elder son Micha
el, and younger daughter Amy, from the chaos of Orlando to begin a new, more relaxed life in the Beaver State. Soon after their arrival however, this new-found tranquillity is disturbed by a succession of brutal but mysterious deaths. As the plot twists and turns its way through small-town secrecy, psychiatry wards and the supernatural, Cody comes under increasing pressure to solve each new case whilst keeping his family safe from harm.

Ivar Leon Menger, author of Monster 1983, said: “Having been raised on Spielberg, King and Kubrick I can’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t watching some kind of horror, sci-fi or psychological thriller. I think the legacy of 70s and 80s horror cinema runs quite strongly through Monster 1983, and that’s part of the reason I decided to create an audio-only story, it emphasises both the nostalgia and suspense for listeners.”

Steve Carsey, Director of Original Programming at Audible, said: “After the enormous success of Alien, Out of the Shadows we knew there was a huge appetite for compelling sci-fi audio fiction. Ivar’s stories have been immensely successful in Germany so we’re really excited to introduce his work to UK listeners.”

Monster 1983 is a Wireless Theatre production for Audible Studios. Written by Ivar Leon Menger, translated by Guy Meredith and directed by Cherry Cookson with music scoring by Ynie Ray.

The Wrong Train by Jeremy de Quidt blog tour

The Wrong TrainThe Wrong Train by Jeremy de Quidt
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It's late. Dark. A boy rushes to catch a train, leaping aboard just before it pulls away. Suddenly he realises that it's the wrong train. He's annoyed of course, but not scared...Yet. He gets off at the next station, but the platform's empty, and it doesn't look like any station he's seen before. But he's still not scared...Yet. Then a stranger arrives - someone with stories to help pass the time. Only these aren't any old stories. These are nightmares, and they come with a price to pay...Scared yet? You will be.

I read this book in one sitting and it certainly kept me entertained and wanting to know what was going to happen.

This is the first book I have read by Quidt and to be honest I didn't know what to expect. I had heard that it was quite a scary book, and scary books are not my type of thing so was a little apprehensive when I picked it up. There was no need to be though, I didn't find this very scary. It was intense at times and I did hold my breath on a couple of occasions.

I thought this was a very cleverly written book. There is the over arching theme and plot, which is broken intermittently with a collection of 9 short stories. These stories were fast paced and kept you interested throughout. I began to become more and more intrigued with the boy and the old man, wondering what his intentions are and how the boy was going to go home. At one point I thought I had worked out the ending, mine actually would have been scarier than the actual ending, but would have been very abrupt!

Although a short read at just over 210 pages, there is such a lot packed in that you don't notice the page length. This is a different type of book that I normally go for, however I am so glad I gave this a chance as I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would be interested in picking up more from Quidt.

I don't want to say too much about the book, as to not spoil your enjoyment of it. If you like jumpy books, that send a shiver down your spine I would recommend this one to you.

The only reason I have given this book 4* and not 5 is down to the ending, although it did surprise me, I had worked it out once the boy had got home. I think the ending could have been a little stronger.

I would like to thank the publisher for sending this in exchange for an honest review.

Jeremy stopped by with a guest post too, I asked him about his favourite scary stories.

Sam asked me to post about Spooky Stories - to give you my top 10 adult and children’s scary books - and that causes me a bit of a problem because as a genre, I’ve never read spooky stories. Not ever.

Given what I write, that might sound a bit unlikely, but it’s true.

As a small child and growing up through my teens I had such nightmares. Not just bad dreams but  real nightmares -  screaming, tear the heart out of the dark, nightmares - night after night. If you’d like to know all about that, then take a look back to the start of this tour because I told Beth at Readers Corner all about those days.

The long and the short of it is that the younger me could fill the hours of darkness with enough terror of my own making without ever needing to look in a book for it. So I never did. Not once. Never got into the habit of it since.

They said that as a child I had a dark imagination. They didn’t know the half of it. Its legacy is that I have a very clear recall of what frightened me then and I use that now when I need to. It’s like dipping a pen into old familiar ink.

Though I can’t tell you about spooky books I’ve read, I’ve got a mental list of scary books that if I were inclined to do some exploring, they are where I’d start. So, I’ll share that list with you and who knows, we might one day end up having gone over the same ground.

Here we go, adult stories first and in no particular order -

1.    Dracula by Bram Stoker. You can’t write a novel that fixes a character in global consciousness without it being an extraordinary story. Maybe the style will have dated, but the substance? No. This has to be on the list.
2.    The Shining by Stephen King. What makes so many people so very frightened by the stories that Stephen writes? If I’m going to find out, then I’ll look at this one. An isolated hotel, murder, possession and the supernatural. Makes me want to walk away from it right now.
3.    The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. This is a novel from the end of the 50’s but it’s considered by Stephen King to be one of the finest horror novels of the late 20th century and that is some recommendation. A house with a dark past and people misguided enough to want to uncover its secrets.
4.    The collected short stories of MR James, Sheridan LeFanu and Saki. These I have to confess I’ve read. Gems from another age and written with such skill. Perfect for dark winter’s nights, candlelight and the embers of a fire.
5.    Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. A travelling carnival and a Midwestern town whose people are lured into darkness. Why not give this one a go? I like Bradbury’s writing though I’ve not read this. He’s very readable, like a daydream happening. Only this will be a dark daydream.

and for children -

1.    The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud.  Ghosts, hauntings and spectres appearing throughout London, all hunted down by Lockwood and Co. Jonathan’s writing is always a pleasure. He’s creative and funny and I just know that he will have the tone of this spot on.
2.    The Witches by Roald Dahl. Of course I’ve read this, and it’s frightening and touching on a variety of levels. There will be something unsettling enough for just about every reader.
3.    And then what about Roald Dahl’s Book of Ghost Stories? Fourteen stories by other authors but curated by Dahl. This more for the Young Adult reader. I think this will be like a box of pearls assembled by a master jeweller.
4.    Breathe by Cliff McNish. This is one I’ve read. An asthmatic child and his mother in a house with benign and far less benign supernatural forces about them. It really is very good. It makes you look at the emptiness of a room and wonder if it really is that empty.
5.    Coraline by Neil Gaiman. Ghost children’s souls and a child’s lost parents all mixed in another world. Sinister and memorable. A read alone or read-out-loud story. Buttons and eyes will never be quite the same.

There, ten stories all spooked and lined up ready for you.

I’ll just turn out the light now.

Sweet dreams.

iPhone 7 Case, Weggo Hard Transparent Liquid Glitter Flowding Floating Bling Sparkle Love Case Cover for Apple iPhone 7 4.7 inch (BluePink)

iPhone 7 Case, Weggo Hard Transparent Liquid Glitter Flowding Floating Bling Sparkle Love Case Cover for Apple iPhone 7 4.7 inch (BluePink)

Compatible with Apple iPhone 7, not for 7 Plus.
Made of hard plastic which is safe and protective, light weight which fits your phone perfectly
Liquid can move freely, just like the stars floating in the water, add much fun to you
Humanized design makes our case more useful, you can access all buttons with the case, and the size is comfortable for you to catch.
Package included:1 x Phone Case(not include the phone)

Who doesn't love a glittery phone case? The colour of the 'confetti' is only what can be described as unicorn coloured. There is hearts of baby pink, blue and purple along with glitter in the case, which is really eye catching and moves as you do.

When the case is on the phone it is a little chunky, this can be expected though due to the layering of the case. This phone case goes onto the phone easily and I haven't had any issues removing it. You can also charge your phone while the case is on, which makes it a lot easier.

The only slight negative I have with this case is that it doesn't give hardly any if at all protection to the front and sides of the phone. I like a case that is slightly raised around the edges, so if you drop your phone you won't crack the screen as it takes a bit of the impact. This case will not offer any protection to the edges or the front and that is an issue for me. I think if the case came with a protected screen on the front I would feel more confident with the case on my phone. This is the reason I haven't awarded the case 5*.

The Witnesses by James Patterson

The WitnessesThe Witnesses by James Patterson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The family next door has a very dark secret.

The Sanderson family has been forced into hiding after one of them stumbled upon a criminal plot. Or so they think. No one will answer their questions. And the terrifying truth may come too late...

I love James Patterson books, I think they are faced paced and they always grab me from the first page. This little book was no different.

James Patterson has released many short stories this year under the 'bookshot' series to encourage reluctant readers, this is the first I have read in this series. I love the idea of them as I can fit in a story into my busy day. As this was free on kindle I decided to start with this one.

This story focuses on the Sanderson family, who are on witness protection and have been moved from Tunisia to a small town in America. Ronald ex police lives next door and had to retire due to ill health but never really gave up on the job. He is constantly on the look out for any suspicious behaviour. When the Sanderson family move next door, which as far as he can work out is a body guard he knows something is not right. Perhaps they are terrorists? He will keep an eye on them.

I don't want to say too much about the plot as the book is so short, but I did enjoy the book. The only negative I have is that the ending felt a little rushed compared to the rest of the book. I would recommend this to others and I will be reading the others in the bookshot series.

iPhone 7 Case, iPhone 7 Cover, ESR® iPhone 7 Ultra Thin Clear Soft TPU Case Cover with Cute Cartoon for iPhone 7 (Flower Kitten)

iPhone 7 Case, iPhone 7 Cover, ESR® iPhone 7 Ultra Thin Clear Soft TPU Case Cover with Cute Cartoon for iPhone 7 (Flower Kitten)

From Amazon:
  • Flexible TPU Material: Processed by anti-deformation enhancement, it is not easy to cause deformation after repeated assembly and disassembly.
  • Ultra Slim: The middle of the back cover is only 0.8mm to maintain the integrated slim exterior and light touch.
  • Double-Sided Printing: The double-sided printing presents you splendid clear pattern.
  • Screen & Camera Protection: 1.2mm higher than screen and 0.3mm higher than camera to offer the protection of your iPhone.
  • Open Cut-Out: Access to all the controls and features; Perfect cutouts for speakers, camera and other ports.

This case came in a really professional box with information and a certificate. When opening the box, I took out a silicone type case, which you can see from my photos.

I really like the picture on the back of the case, it is really crisp, colourful and I love how the apple forms part of the picture on the back. I also really like the fact that the phone case is clear as it allows you to see the apple phone case.

Being silicone the cover is very bendy and flexible as you can see in one of my photos. The only negative I have about this cover is the fact the side protection is a little limited. Thankfully I haven't dropped my phone, but if I were to, I am not sure it would offer the level of protection I require. The sides seem very flimsy. All cut outs are in the right places and you can fit your charging cable in perfectly. There is also the correct cut out for your camera and this doesn't distract the photos.

If you are looking for a bendy, flexible case I would recommend you choose one of these, they come in a range of designs, all making the apple a feature.

I was sent this item in exchange for my honest review. This does not affect my personal opinion. I am sharing my own experience upon trying out the product.

Dewey's 24 hour readathon

Image result for dewey 24 hour readathon

Wow I can't believe that the readathon has come back around! I think this is now my 6th and I want it to be my most successful yet!

Over the last few ones I have identified my strengths and weaknesses, one of which is having the t.v on in the background. (Won't be making that mistake this time!)

So this is the opening meme and I will try and add all challenges/updates through this post, so make sure you come back to check those out! While I am on the subject of updates, look out for something exciting during hour 18!!! EEEEEK I can't wait for that one!

So anyway hour 1- Challenge:

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?

I am here in the U.K hello!!!!

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?

Lyrebird by Cecelia Ahern

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?

My Alio dip with pitta! (Is that even spelt right?!?)

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!

So as I said before this is my 6th readathon and I am hoping it is going to be my most successful, hopefully I have learnt from errors from the previous and I can get a lot more reading time in. I am a primary school teacher so during term time it is tricky to fit in reading and I read sugnificantly less than I want to. Today is also the first day of half term so I am super excited to get my reading bug back!

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?

Ok, as I mentioned before I normally have the T.V on in the background, this is something I won't be doing this time. I have also picked out my snacks early enough to make sure I am not faffing when I get peckish.

End of Event Survey

  1. Which hour was most daunting for you?
I would say hour 10 - mainly because I had been reading solidly for 10 hours and my eyes were feeling it!

Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?
I have read a Christmas book to get me in the mood and I think that was a good choose.

Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next season?

Nope.

What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?

The fact I had the TV off in the background! No distractions!

How many books did you read?

I am hoping to have finished my 3rd book by the end.

What were the names of the books you read?

Mistletoe on 34th Street, the treasure map of boys and fly on the wall.

Which book did you enjoy most?

Mistletoe on 34th street.

Which did you enjoy least?

Fly on the wall.

How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?

Yep I'll be there, I will be a reader and I would love to host another mini challenge. That was fun!

iPhone 6 Case,iPhone 6s Case,G.D.SMITH Ultra Slim Thin Cooling Paster Metal Aluminum Heat Dissipation Cover Hard PC Anti Scratch Back Protector Case for iPhone 6/iPhone 6s (Grey)

iPhone 6 Case,iPhone 6s Case,G.D.SMITH Ultra Slim Thin Cooling Paster Metal Aluminum Heat Dissipation Cover Hard PC Anti Scratch Back Protector Case for iPhone 6/iPhone 6s (Grey)

£8.99
From Amazon:
  • Cooling Paster: Exclusive design with heat patch, embedded thermal conductivity aluminum, rapid cooling for your iphone
  • Dust & Scratch Resistant: Protect your iPhone from dust and scratches from daily use, keep your iphone looks brand new
  • Slim Fit & POCKET THIN: One of the best minimalistic hard metal case, which provide you the comfortable hand feeling and convenient to put it on your pokect
  • Easy Access ports: Perfect cutouts allow us easy to ports, buttons and speakers, more convenient and humanize
  • Not Full Cover Design: Easily snaps into place. The metal outlines gives it a classy look as well as the "G.D. Smith" logo

I am very impressed with this phone case, it's sleek and light weight. The case is cut out in the appropriate area for volume control, camera, on/off button etc.

I like the design of it, it looks very professional, one negative I do have on the cover is the marking G D SMITH, I really don't like having this branding on the cover. If it was necessary to brand it perhaps this could have been on the inside of the case or just one initial. This is one reason I have downgraded the cover to 4*. This is just personal taste however.

The cover comes in 3 different colours, I choose the grey one and am really pleased with the finish of the cover.

This is very slim line and seems like there is nothing on the case, when showing it to my brother he had to look twice to spot the cover. This is really great if you want the sides protected without the look of a case on the phone. The case does not protect the front of the phone in any way as the sides barely cover it. If the phone was to be dropped on it's front there would be very little protection. I feel that it could have come with a glass front protection this would made me more confident with using it. I will be purchasing a glass cover for piece of mind as the iphone was a lot of money and the last thing I want to do it crack the screen. This is the other reason I have docked a star.

If this could be improved to add a screen protector and perhaps remove the logo it would get 5 stars as I really do love the idea of the product.

This is a good cover for a good price and if you already have a protector I would recommend you buy this as the overall look and quality is good.

I hope my review has been helpful to you.

iPhone 7 Case,iPhone 7 Cover,ESR® iPhone 7 Sparkle Bling Glitter Case Cover for iPhone 7 (Rose Gold)

iPhone 7 Case,iPhone 7 Cover,ESR® iPhone 7 Sparkle Bling Glitter Case Cover for iPhone 7 (Rose Gold)

£7.99
  • Compatibility: Fits perfectly with iPhone 7.
  • 3-in-1 Structure: Designed with TPU layer + Color Make-up layer + PC layer to protect your iPhone from dropping, shocking and scratching etc.
  • Bling Bling Style: The "Bling Bling" design will make your phone look fashionable and let you match any occasions.
  • Perfect Fit: Ultra-thin with light weight design will never make your iPhone looks bulky.
  • Convenience: Easy access to all buttons, controls & ports without having to remove the case.

This iphone case is wonderful. I love the sparkly effect on it, it also fits perfectly.

The buttons are in the exact place for volume etc and I feel that it offers enough protection to the edges of the iphone. I had only just put this cover on my phone and I ended up dropping my phone onto a wooden floor, when I checked for damage the case had protected it perfectly and I feel very confident now using this when I am out.

I love the effect of the glitter and I really like the cut out apple hole in the back of the case, there is a branding on the back in raised plastic, so unless you look really closely you don't notice it.

I have seen that many people are complaining that they can't charge their phone with this case on. I have tried to charge it with the official charger and it fits perfectly. We also have an unofficial one for cable length and that one won't fit while the phone is in the case. I suggest taking the phone out to charge if you have an unofficial cable.

I choose the rose gold case, not really knowing what colour to expect, it is more of a baby pink, which I think is lovely.

I think that this case is being offered at a good price.

I hope this review has been helpful.

Pride and Prejudice: A Coloring Classic by Chellie Carroll

Pride and Prejudice: A Coloring ClassicPride and Prejudice: A Coloring Classic by Chellie Carroll
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fall in love with Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice all over again with this elegant colouring book, featuring beautifully intricate patterns and iconic scenes to colour in. Let yourself be transported to Pemberley's spectacular grounds and vibrant Netherfield balls, and bring to life elegant portraits of Elizabeth and Mr Darcy. With handpicked quotations from the novel on every spread, this colouring book is perfect for any Jane Austen fan.

I love a colouring book and I love classics so when I was offered the chance to review this I couldn't wait, because what's not to love?

This is a square shaped book which is of normal size for a colouring book. I really like the fact that there are quotes through it taken from the original and that the book is in chronological order. Each sheet of paper is of good quality, however I have used pens on the paper and they bled through. You can see the images below.  When switching to colouring pencils I really liked the effect and it didn't spoil other pages.

The spine is string bound with glue, this makes the centre of the page difficult to colour as the images bleed into the centre. This wouldn't matter if you were going to remove the pages to display but trying to colour to the centre without moving the pages was problematic.

There is a mixture of fine and thick lines in the book, also flowers and other images. I really loved the pictures from the settling of the book, which have a great mix of detail and larger areas to colour.
Purple pen showing through

If you love Jane Austen and/or colouring books be sure to add this to your collection.

I would like to thank the publisher for sending this in exchange for an honest review.
